## Description

The 5 Gyres Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to advance a plastic pollution-free future. Its approach combines science, advocacy, community engagement, and public support to develop and promote solutions to plastic pollution. The organization conducts scientific research, supports policies addressing plastic waste, and invites people to participate in community-based efforts.

Its initiatives include TrashBlitz, which engages participants in recording litter, and programs such as Microplastic-Free US and Plastic-Free Parks. The institute also runs TrashBlitz Caribbean, organizes expeditions including the Tahoe Rim Trail Expedition, and builds participation through its Ambassador Network. These efforts connect research and public involvement with advocacy for change.

The 5 Gyres Institute shares its work through resources, news, and annual impact reporting, and invites supporters to donate, join its movement, and sign up for updates. The organization reports measures including items recorded through TrashBlitz, laboratory hours, new ambassadors, and bills supported. It has held special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council since 2017.
