## Description

The American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) is a nonprofit organization that has connected observers with astronomical research since 1911. Its mission is to give amateur astronomers and students opportunities to make direct contributions to the study of the universe. Through a global community of citizen scientists, the AAVSO collects and shares observations that support research, with more than 74 million observations submitted and data covering 10.4 million variable stars.

The organization helps newcomers get started, noting that observations can begin with the unaided eye. Its resources include step-by-step observing guides, manuals, peer learning and support programs, and tools for finding stars visible from a user’s location. Observers can submit data, take part in observing campaigns, and access research resources such as the Variable Star Index, searchable data, the Journal of the AAVSO, and API documentation.

The AAVSO also offers educational programs, events, special interest groups, membership, and volunteer opportunities. It relies on donations and member support to help broaden participation in scientific discovery.
