## Description

ADCO, the Associação de Diabéticos do Concelho de Ovar, is a nonprofit social solidarity institution serving people with diabetes in Ovar and nearby municipalities. Founded in 1994 after its development from a local diabetes association network, it grew out of concerns about limited information on diabetes mellitus and the challenges of accepting and managing the condition. Its work was first encouraged by healthcare activity at Ovar Health Centre and a 1992 visit to Portugal’s diabetes association, APDP.

ADCO provides differentiated, specialised support shaped by the needs of its members. Its mission includes helping people with diabetes, their caregivers and families build the knowledge and skills needed to promote health and manage the condition. The association also works to support social inclusion and defend the rights of people with diabetes, assist those facing financial hardship, and refer critical cases for appropriate care. It offers information and suitable self-monitoring materials, alongside personalised support for young people through the Ovar Young Diabetics group.
