## Description

AEPMI, the Spanish Association of People Affected by Mitochondrial Diseases, is a nonprofit organization founded in 1999 by affected individuals and families. Recognized as being of public utility by Spain’s Ministry of the Interior, it works to support patients and relatives while advancing research into mitochondrial conditions. These diseases result from impaired energy production in cells, can affect people of any age and any organ or system, and currently have no cure.

AEPMI promotes scientific research aimed at improving therapeutic and rehabilitative possibilities, and brings together patients across Spain to coordinate shared efforts. It provides information about conditions, diagnosis, treatment and medical advice, and seeks to improve access to support and therapies. The association also raises public and institutional awareness, cooperates with organizations pursuing similar goals, and promotes social inclusion through help related to family life, education, vocational training and employment. It organizes training for healthcare professionals and caregivers. Supporters can contribute through donations, Bizum, fundraising calls, micro-donations, charity products, recycled bottle caps and benefit events organized by families with AEPMI’s support.
