## Description

The African Elephant Research Unit (AERU) is a registered non-profit trust based at Knysna Elephant Park in South Africa. Established in 2009, it is dedicated to improving the welfare and management of African elephants in semi-captive environments. AERU combines scientific research with a compassionate approach, studying elephant biology, behaviour, and social lives to support more informed, responsible care.

The organization conducts ongoing research and works with university partners, sharing insights that contribute to understanding elephants and their welfare. Its programme also welcomes volunteers, who can learn research practices, help gather important data, and take part in environmental education initiatives. Volunteer information includes details about accommodation, preparation, and frequently asked questions.

AERU offers opportunities to learn about its research, team, and herd, as well as ways to support its work through donations, sponsorship, and fundraising projects. By bringing together researchers, students, volunteers, and supporters, AERU aims to advance ethical conservation and inspire greater understanding of elephants in South Africa and beyond.
