## Description

Against the Grain is an Australian initiative that uses challenging outdoor adventures to encourage people with disabilities and mental illness, along with their families and carers, to keep embracing life and pursuing activities that bring excitement, satisfaction and enjoyment. Its adventures take place across rugged Western Australia and are presented as a way to inspire participants and the wider community.

In 2014, the team set out to complete the Australasian Safari, an off-road motorsport event. The project featured driver Jim Cairns and mechanic Rex Baker, whose roles were described as “man behind the wheel” and master of repairs. Against the Grain shares updates about its adventures through its website and invites people to follow along on Facebook.

The initiative is supported by Fairholme Disability Support Group and works toward the Western Australian Government’s Count Me In vision. This vision promotes welcoming communities where everyone can participate as citizens and build friendships, mutual support and a fair go.
