## Description

The Archaeological Institute is Serbia’s central scientific research institution dedicated to archaeology. Founded by the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1947, it became an independent institution in 1961. Its researchers investigate archaeological sites and cultural heritage across Serbia, working on subjects spanning prehistory, antiquity, the Roman period and the Middle Ages. Key areas of activity include field excavation, archaeological technology and laboratory research, heritage protection, and the study of major sites such as Viminacium and Caričin Grad.

The Institute leads and participates in national and international research projects, collaborates with universities and cultural institutions, and contributes to conferences, exhibitions and European initiatives.
