## Description

The AI Security Institute (AISI) is a research organisation and directorate within the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. It is the first state-backed organisation dedicated to advancing the safety, security and beneficial use of advanced AI. Its mission is to equip governments with a scientific understanding of the risks these systems may pose.

AISI conducts technical research to monitor AI development, assess capabilities and impacts, and evaluate risks to national security and public safety. It builds research infrastructure and develops and tests mitigations, including safeguards, alignment and control approaches. Its work includes evaluating the cyber capabilities of AI models and studying how conversational systems may influence people.

The Institute also works with AI developers, researchers and other governments to support responsible development, share findings with international partners and inform policymaking on current and emerging risks. Through research, collaboration and grants, AISI contributes evidence and expertise to advanced AI governance.
