Founded in 2022 by Ingrid and Marc Brakenrig, the centre provides a welcoming, home-away-from-home environment where children and families are supported to learn and grow together. Its programme is led by a passionate team of teachers and offers varied, real-life learning experiences designed to nurture children’s curiosity and encourage lifelong learning. Low teacher-to-child ratios help the team support each child’s individual journey. The learning environment is thoughtfully designed with nature in mind and aims to engage children from the moment they arrive. Ako’s approach is inspired by the Māori concept of ako: the reciprocal process of teaching and learning, in which teachers, children and whānau share knowledge and experiences. The centre welcomes family input into its activities and plans, and works to foster children’s confidence, wellbeing and sense of belonging.
