V. Krishna's Alar is an esteemed Kannada-English dictionary a significant resource created by V. Krishna over four decades of dedicated work, starting from the 1970s as a personal project. The dictionary, featuring over 150,000 Kannada words accompanied by more than 240,000 English definitions, serves as an invaluable contribution to the preservation and promotion of the Kannada language. Released under the Open Database License (ODC-ODbL), this authoritative corpus is accessible as open data, allowing users to explore its extensive vocabulary freely.

V. Krishna, a Bengaluru resident, has not only authored this comprehensive dictionary but also digitized original manuscripts, making the knowledge more widely available. In 2019, with support from Zerodha, he open-sourced the dictionary online, furthering its reach. As of 2023, Alar operates under the Indic Digital Archive Foundation, with plans to expand into an English-Kannada dictionary, ensuring the continued enhancement of language resources. This project represents a pivotal development in bridging linguistic divides and fostering cultural understanding.
