## Description

Alberta Envirothon is an Alberta-based environmental education initiative that organizes an annual, team-based academic competition for high school students. Its purpose is to build students’ knowledge of environmental science and natural resource management through study, collaboration, and hands-on learning. The competition focuses on five subject areas: soils and land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and a changing current issue. Teams prepare using educational resources and take part in field stations and scenario presentations, where their knowledge and problem-solving are assessed. The winning team has the opportunity to represent Alberta at the National Conservation Foundation Envirothon, an international competition. Alberta Envirothon also shares information about its history, event structure, study topics, and ReconciliACTION initiatives. The association is a member in good standing of the National Conservation Foundation Envirothon and emphasizes inclusive participation. It is committed to meaningful relationships with Indigenous Peoples, experiential environmental education, and honouring the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
