Alderney Library is a renowned brand that has been serving the community of Alderney for over 70 years. It all started in 1949 when a generous donation of 1500 books from a friend in the U. S.
A. Since then, the library has been maintained and developed solely through the dedicated efforts of volunteers. Over the years, the library has moved to three different locations, with the most recent move in 2003 to a purpose-built building that was funded entirely by the library volunteers and built by members of the community.
This new building features modern facilities, including areas for the visually handicapped, access for the physically disabled, and a Children's Room. The library is open to both residents and visitors and offers a wide range of books and resources for all ages. Their collection continues to grow, and the library welcomes donations of unwanted books.
In addition to providing library services, Alderney Library is known for its impressive Alderney Bayeux Tapestry Finale. This community project created a missing end to the famous Bayeux Tapestry and gained recognition from the Curator of the Bayeux Tapestry Museum. The Alderney Tapestry was displayed in the museum in 2014, a remarkable achievement.
The library has also received the Queen's Golden Jubilee Award for its voluntary service and fundraising efforts.
