Alpion CryoSolutions is an EPFL spin-off in development that creates instruments to expand the capabilities of cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). Built on years of peer-reviewed research from the Lorenz lab at EPFL, the company addresses two challenges in studying protein structures: capturing rapid changes over time and overcoming preferred particle orientation. CryoShuffle uses gentle ultrasonic excitation during plunge freezing to keep particles tumbling, helping researchers obtain additional views and improve reconstructions. The instruments are intended for core facilities, academic laboratories, and drug discovery teams. By revealing protein motions and transient conformations, Alpion’s technology aims to support structural biology research and better-informed drug discovery decisions.
