About
Description
The American Asthma Foundation (AAF) was established in 1999 with a clear mission: to enhance asthma treatment and ultimately find a cure or prevention for the disease. AAF's unique approach focused on supporting basic research to identify new targets for therapy. Over the course of 20 years, AAF received substantial support from generous donors, including the Sandler Foundation, who invested over $100 million directly into asthma research.
Despite the remarkable success in bringing new drugs to clinical trials and developing potential therapies, fundraising efforts did not meet the scale needed to sustain the program. Consequently, in 2019, the AAF made the difficult decision to suspend its operations. AAF's pioneering model emphasized engaging top investigators from various fields to concentrate their expertise on asthma research.
This approach yielded exceptional results, as evidenced by the recruitment of over 180 outstanding principal investigators and 495 trainees, most of whom were new to the field. Moreover, 65 of these trainees have since become independent investigators in the field. AAF's influence extends beyond its funded period, with continued research and development being conducted by investigators.
For those interested in a deeper understanding of the AAF program, a comprehensive description is available online, along with an article published in Science Translational Medicine in 2015. To explore the possibility of applying AAF's research approach to other diseases, interested parties can reach out to William E. Seaman, M.
D., the Research Director of the American Asthma Foundation. Though the AAF's operations are currently suspended, its significant impact on asthma research and its potential for inspiring other research programs remains indisputable
