About

Description

Animal Health Canada (AHC) is a leading pan-Canadian organization that fosters collaboration between the public and private sectors, including federal, provincial, and territorial governments as well as various animal agriculture industry sectors. Established in 2021, AHC emerged from the National Farmed Animal Health and Welfare Council and now serves as a crucial structure for implementing the animal health components of the Plant and Animal Health Strategy for Canada. AHC operates as a not-for-profit organization, jointly funded by federal, provincial, and industry/non-government stakeholders.

With a focus on accountability and open decision-making, AHC draws on expert knowledge to address critical topics such as animal welfare, emerging diseases, animal health surveillance, antimicrobial use and resistance, and the concept of one welfare. Collaborating with its divisions, AHC takes the lead in initiating projects that meet the needs of animal health and welfare stakeholders across Canada. Driven by a vision of a sustainable agriculture sector that safeguards the health and welfare of farmed animals, AHC works towards establishing a harmonized and integrated approach to managing the animal health and welfare program in Canada.

Their strategic direction has evolved over the years, following the renewal of the NFAHW Strategy in 2014 and the release of the Plant and Animal Health Strategy for Canada in 2017.
