The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) is dedicated to promoting high welfare standards in animal husbandry, focusing on humane and sustainable farming practices. Established in 1986, AWI has been at the forefront of advocating for the humane treatment of farmed animals, starting with the development of rigorous pork husbandry standards in collaboration with farmers, veterinarians, and animal behavior experts. In 1989, AWI achieved a significant milestone by securing the first USDA-approved label for pork from pigs raised on family farms, where they had outdoor access and were not subjected to routine antibiotics.

The organization expanded its efforts to include various farm species, adhering to the principle that farming methods should align with the needs of the animals. AWI now operates the Animal Welfare Approved program, which promotes humane practices—ensuring animals can exhibit natural behaviors in enriched environments, free from harmful practices. Through education and legislative advocacy, AWI works tirelessly to secure better lives for over 9.7 billion farmed animals in the United States each year.
