APPEL (Affiliation for Pharmacy Practice Experiential Learning) is a unique collaboration between University College Cork (UCC), the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), and Trinity College Dublin (Trinity). They manage the experiential learning placements of the integrated pharmacy programs in Ireland. APPEL serves as a single point of contact for trainers, training establishments, and students, facilitating all placement activities. The formation of APPEL was prompted by the PEARs project, commissioned by the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI) to review pharmacy education. The project recommended replacing the traditional 4+1 model with a 5-year fully integrated pharmacy program. In response, S.I. No. 377 of 2014 was enacted to introduce this new program. Under the new integrated pharmacy program, students engage in patient-facing situations and real-life pharmacy practice throughout their studies. APPEL oversees the experiential learning placements in years 2, 4, and 5 of the program for all Irish Schools of Pharmacy.
