## Description

Aspirational Neuroscience is a donor-funded nonprofit founded in 2018 to advance research into learning and memory and test theories of how memories are represented in the brain. Its central goal is the Memory Decoding Challenge: to decode a non-trivial memory, or another learned function, using only a static map of synaptic connectivity. The organization presents this as a major test of whether current theories can explain how brain structure encodes experience.

To encourage progress, Aspirational Neuroscience offers a $100,000 prize for the first team to meet the challenge and four annual research awards recognizing work on the physical and functional basis of learning and memory. Its programs also include a private, invitation-only email discussion group, a fortnightly Journal Club, and yearly meetups, conferences, and a Society for Neuroscience reception bringing together experimental and theoretical researchers.

Relevant research areas include memory engrams, synapse-resolution electron-microscopic connectomics, molecular mechanisms of memory, neuronal activity decoding, and theoretical and computational neuroscience.
