## Description

A Street Near You is a First World War legacy project that uses interactive maps to connect historical records with places around the world. Created in 2018 as a personal project, it helps visitors explore the local impact of the conflict by finding people who died while serving and viewing associated addresses, cemeteries, regiments, ships, squadrons, and war memorials. The site brings together more than one million personal records and over 600,000 locations, alongside images and links to related sources. Its core materials include the Imperial War Museum’s Lives of the First World War, collections of portraits and photographs, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records, and war memorial registers from the UK and New Zealand. Visitors can search by name, regiment, date of death, cemetery, or location, and can sign up for alerts when matching records are added or changed. The project also invites users to report location errors and contribute information through linked historical records, supporting a wider effort to make the wartime legacy more accessible.
