About
Description
The Absentee Shawnee Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma has a rich history that spans across the Eastern United States. From Canada to Florida and from the Mississippi River to the East Coast, the tribe has traveled before settling in their current territory. Originally residing in the northeastern parts of the United States, the Shawnee Indians now occupy areas in Oklahoma.
They are known as a Woodland Tribe and speak the Algonquian dialect. Today, there are three federally-recognized tribes of the Shawnee People: the Absentee-Shawnee, the (Loyal) Shawnee, and the Eastern Shawnee. The Absentee Shawnee Tribe is distinguished by their decision not to sign the 1854 treaty and settle in Kansas, instead migrating to Indian Territory (Oklahoma).
Their cultural heritage, ceremonies, dances, and language continue to thrive, showcasing their traditional way of life. The tribe's government consists of a legislative/executive branch and a judicial branch. With a current membership of 4,638, the Absentee Shawnee Tribe remains rooted in their ancestral land in Shawnee, Oklahoma
