## Description

Atspire is an art collection and exhibition venue in Utrecht’s central district, presenting private collections and temporary exhibitions, with works available for sale. Its featured collection belongs to Klaas de Jonge, a Dutch civil rights defender born in 1937 who became internationally known for his activism against apartheid in South Africa. De Jonge assembled the collection over several decades while living, working, and exploring across much of the African continent.

The collection brings together African art, ethnographic objects, and tribal art, offering visitors an opportunity to explore the cultural heritage and artistic traditions represented in its holdings. Atspire also provides information about the geographic regions connected to the works, including the Lega peoples, who live in the southeastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s central rainforest region, between the Great Lakes and the Lualaba River.

Through its exhibitions and collection presentations, Atspire connects audiences with art, objects, and the stories behind them.
