About

Description

The African Union (AU) is a continental body that consists of 55 member states from across the African continent. Established in 2002 as a successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the AU aims to promote Africa's growth and economic development through citizen inclusion, increased cooperation, and integration of African states. The history of the AU can be traced back to 1963, when 32 heads of independent African states came together to sign the Charter creating the OAU.

The OAU was founded on the principles of pan-Africanism, with a vision for a united, free, and self-determined Africa. Its main objectives were to eradicate colonization and apartheid, foster unity and solidarity among African states, coordinate development efforts, and safeguard sovereignty. Today, the AU is actively engaged in a wide range of key program areas, including conflict resolution, peace, and security; infrastructure and energy development; agricultural development; trade and industrial development; promoting health and nutrition; and education, science, and technology.

The AU Commission, along with various departments and specialized units, works towards implementing these programs and driving Africa towards inclusive and sustainable development. In addition to its programmatic work, the AU is also committed to the implementation of Agenda 2063, a strategic framework for transforming Africa into a global powerhouse. This blueprint for development focuses on key areas such as infrastructure, education, good governance, and economic integration.

With its dedication to promoting Africa's growth and development, the African Union plays a vital role in shaping the continent's future. Through its initiatives, partnerships, and commitment to citizen inclusion, the AU strives to create an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful Africa
