About
Description
AustinUP is a community alliance dedicated to enhancing the lives of older adults in Central Texas. Our goal is to address the unmet needs of the aging population, leverage the assets of older adults to improve our community, and foster an age-friendly culture through innovation and creativity. Our history is rooted in recognizing the rapid growth of the 55+ demographic in Austin.
As former Mayor Lee Leffingwell saw this trend, he convened a Task Force on Aging in 2012-13. The task force, which included leaders from various sectors, conducted extensive research and engaged with local seniors to develop strategic recommendations for supporting the aging population. To implement these recommendations, the task force proposed the establishment of a City of Austin Commission on Seniors and a nonprofit organization, AustinUP.
That's how AustinUP was born. Today, AustinUP is a 501(c)(3) community alliance that collaborates with businesses, civic leaders, nonprofit organizations, and individuals to raise awareness about the aging population and prepare our community for the future. Our focus areas include enhancing livability for older adults, expanding Austin's role in the longevity marketplace, connecting age-smart employers with older job seekers, and changing perceptions about aging.
