About
Description
The Australian Volunteers Program is an Australian Government-funded initiative that supports global volunteering. The program aims to match skilled Australians with partner organizations across the Pacific, Asia, and Africa to support them in achieving their own development goals. By fostering strong mutual relationships between Australia and communities globally, the program contributes to achieving equitable development outcomes and the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Australian Volunteers Program takes a people-centered approach to capacity development and offers various initiatives. These include volunteer assignments, with a targeted initiative for Indigenous Australian volunteers, as well as support for partner organizations through a small grants program called the Impact Fund. The program also focuses on connecting ideas and people through the Innovation Hub, fostering connections between international partners and Australian organizations, and sharing learning and knowledge through training and networking.
The program is underpinned by a rigorous approach and is guided by principles such as gender equality, disability inclusion, child protection, research and evaluation, and prevention of sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment. It is committed to best practices and innovation and ensures diversity and inclusion. The Australian Volunteers Program operates within the policy framework of the Australian Government's development policy, the Foreign Policy White Paper, and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
It is managed by AVI in partnership with DT Global and Alinea International, and it is part of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's people-to-people program portfolio. With a long history of international volunteering in Australia dating back to the 1950s, the Australian Volunteers Program continues to be a powerful approach to capacity development.
