GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has developed the world's first fully approved vaccine for older adults to protect against the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). On May 3, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave its approval for the vaccine, called Arexvy, for use in individuals aged 60 and older. RSV is a virus that affects millions in the U.S. The vaccine has shown to be over 80% effective in preventing lower respiratory tract disease caused by RSV. The most common side effects reported include pain at the injection site, fatigue, muscle pain, headache, and joint stiffness and pain. While an extremely rare case of Guillain-Barré syndrome was reported in one study participant, the overall benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks. This vaccine will be particularly important for older adults who live with young children, as they can unknowingly bring the virus home. With major pharmacy chains like Walgreens, Rite Aid, and CVS starting to offer appointments for the RSV vaccine, older adults now have convenient access to this crucial preventative measure as the fall respiratory season approaches.
