## Description

AVLT, the Associazione Veneta Lotta alla Talassemia, is a Veneto-based organisation dedicated to supporting people with thalassemia and protecting their rights. Founded in Rovigo in 1976 as an association for children with thalassemia, it adopted its current name in 1983 as improved treatments enabled many patients to grow into adulthood. For more than 45 years, AVLT has worked to help patients and their families navigate the challenges of a serious inherited blood disorder.

The association provides practical assistance and information, including guidance on rights and procedures related to matters such as INPS benefits and driving licences. It promotes dialogue with healthcare institutions when needed and shares educational information about thalassemia and prevention through social media, public events and schools. AVLT also invests funds raised from members and supporters in scientific research, supporting projects dedicated to the condition through its research activities, including Thal-Lab and GeneTransferLab. The organisation welcomes donations and contributions through Italy’s 5x1000 tax allocation, and keeps its community informed through news, events and a newsletter.
