## Description

Barak Valley Bengali Literary and Cultural Conference, known as Sammelan, is a registered, non-profit, non-political organization founded in 1977 in Assam’s Barak Valley. It works to preserve and develop Bengali language, literature and culture while supporting the constitutional language rights and cultural identity of all linguistic communities in the region. Its aims include encouraging literary study and research, promoting the status of Bengali, and building cooperative relationships with organizations representing other languages and literary traditions.

Sammelan brings these goals to life through discussions, literary gatherings, competitions, cultural programs and conferences. It supports local writers, poets and cultural contributors by helping with the printing, publication and distribution of their books. The organization also establishes libraries and reading rooms, and its website provides resources on the region’s language movement, literature, cultural organizations and linguistic scholarship. Its activities include publications, archival and photographic materials, and a distance-learning center with published admission information. Based in Silchar, Sammelan combines cultural advocacy with education and community engagement across the Barak Valley.
