## Description

Barbara Butcher is an author, medicolegal death investigator, and former senior official at the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner. As the agency’s Chief of Staff and Director of its Forensic Sciences Training Program, she oversaw management, strategy, and inter-agency relations. Her work in the field spanned more than 20 years and included investigating over 5,500 death scenes, among them 680 homicides.

Her memoir, What the Dead Know, draws on those experiences to offer a candid account of death investigation, homicide cases, and the human realities behind the work. Butcher is also featured in The Death Investigator, a true-crime series that explores cases through her perspective and examines what crime scenes and victims can reveal.
