## Description

Barden Lab at the New Jersey Institute of Technology is a research group focused on understanding the evolutionary history of social insects, particularly ants. The lab uses the social insect fossil record as a model for combining innovative technologies with organismal research, bringing together expertise and methods from paleontology, systematics, biological imaging, functional morphology, genomics, and ecology.

Its work includes investigating insect fossils and evolutionary relationships, using X-ray imaging to examine structures, and applying next-generation sequencing to study biological history. Fieldwork also contributes to the lab’s research, alongside studies of social insects and their morphology. By integrating these approaches, Barden Lab aims to build a broader understanding of how social insects evolved and how evidence from fossils and living organisms can illuminate that history.

The lab shares information about its research themes, publications, members, and outreach through its website. Its listed members include Phil Barden, Christine Sosiak, and Gianpiero Fiorentino.
