## Description

Barnas Senter is a community activity centre in Porto Nacional, in Brazil’s Tocantins state, working to improve the living conditions and opportunities of children from low-income families. Founded in 2000 by Asbjørn and Hitaelane Eikeland, the centre is now run by the Brazilian organisation Comsaúde. More than 400 people take part in its activities, which span health, education, sport and culture. The programme offers accessible opportunities for children and young people, while encouraging positive involvement in their communities and supporting a “help people help themselves” approach.

Activities are designed to complement children’s schooling: participants must be enrolled in a local school. The centre also values local culture and adapts its programmes to the history and resources of each community. Its work includes sports such as badminton, alongside initiatives related to health and nutrition, cultural understanding, anti-racism and vocational training.

In Norway, Barnas Senter is a volunteer organisation that raises funds through schools, kindergartens, local businesses, bottle-return donations and private supporters.
