Welcome to Bates County Museum, located in Butler, MO! Our historical society and museum have been preserving the rich history of Bates County since 1961. As a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, we are dedicated to Preserving Our History & Sustaining Our Heritage. Explore our extensive collections, which are considered some of the finest in the region.


Step back in time as you wander through our museum grounds, which include the Robertson Hall Banquet and Meeting Room. You can also visit the Museum Grounds, where two historic school buildings have been restored and relocated. Inside the museum, you'll find a variety of exhibits showcasing different aspects of Bates County's history.


From the Battle of Island Mound to the Osage Indian Exhibit to the Cold War Exhibit, there's something for everyone. Don't miss the Virgil Ward Exhibit, honoring the local science fiction author Robert Heinlein. Take a guided tour or browse at your own pace.
