## Description

The Norfolk Bat Survey is a British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) project designed to improve understanding of bat distribution and activity and support bat conservation. Launched in April 2013, it uses advances in technology to automate the collection and analysis of acoustic recordings. The project has analysed 1.9 million bat recordings from across Norfolk.

The survey has operated across Norfolk and parts of Suffolk, inviting members of the public to take part by borrowing bat-detection equipment from local Bat Monitoring Centres. Participants survey three locations, ideally at least 200 metres apart, within a one-kilometre square, preferably on consecutive nights. In return, the project provides information about the bat species recorded. Surveying is typically conducted from mid-May to the end of September, subject to equipment availability and project status.

The survey website also offers resources for identifying bat species and bush-crickets, alongside information about its projects and survey methods. The site notes that the Norfolk survey was cancelled for the time being in response to COVID-19.
