## Description

Alcala Art Gallery & Bauer Rare Books brought together a focus on California art and a resource for collectors and readers of rare books. The gallery’s online materials invited visitors to study early California landscape art and explore works by San Diego and Southern California artists, including watercolors, prints, and drawings dating from the 16th through the 20th century. Its archives and articles featured artists and subjects such as Christopher S. Gerlach, Charles Walter Stetson, Françoise Gilot, and Mayan ceramics.

The site reports that Alcala Art Gallery, formerly located at 50 Silverado Street in La Jolla, California, is permanently closed. Bauer’s Rare Books now operates through a separate website and offers books spanning art, architecture, design, interior fashion, photography, illustrated editions, children’s literature, and modern first editions. Its selection also includes rare antiquarian editions dating from the 1600s onward. Together, the site’s historical art content and book listings reflect an interest in visual culture, regional history, and collectible publications.
