## Description

Black Dragon Jiu-Jitsu Academy is a New Zealand martial arts organisation founded in 1979 by Grandmaster Steve Heremaia, described by the academy as the country’s first 10th Dan. With classes in Auckland and Whakatane, it teaches Palming Jiu-Jitsu, a self-defence-oriented system rooted in traditional Kawashi Jiu-Jitsu and incorporating techniques from Small Circle Jiu-Jitsu. Training emphasizes deflection, leverage, control and using an opponent’s momentum, with practical skills intended for everyday situations.

The academy welcomes students of different ages, fitness levels and experience, offering a supportive, low-pressure environment focused on confidence, physical fitness, self-defence and personal development. Its schedule includes children’s and adults’ classes in Auckland, and adult classes in Whakatane; children’s classes in Whakatane are listed as coming soon. New students can attend their first two sessions free.

Black Dragon also promotes cross-training, friendship and connections with other martial arts clubs through community activities and events. The academy provides class information, pricing plans and a store, and offers seminars and private tuition by arrangement.
