## Description

Beam is an open-source blockchain project focused on privacy, confidential digital assets, and decentralized finance. Its Mimblewimble-based Layer 1 network makes transaction privacy the default, using protocols including Mimblewimble and Lelantus. Launched in January 2019, Beam is a proof-of-work network that uses the BeamHash III mining algorithm, and its BEAM coin has a capped supply and a periodically halving emission schedule.

Users can manage BEAM and confidential assets with Beam wallets for desktop, mobile, and web. The network supports creating, bridging, transferring, and trading assets, with transactions designed to resemble ordinary Beam transactions. Its confidential DeFi features include stablecoins, NFTs, and an automated market maker exchange, alongside atomic swaps for selected cryptocurrencies. Developers can build private decentralized applications using Beam’s virtual machine and smart contracts, known as shaders.

Beam also provides documentation, a blockchain explorer, developer resources, mining guidance, and community channels. The project is transitioning toward BeamX DAO governance with on-chain voting. Its ecosystem is designed to support private payments, asset trading, and decentralized applications while prioritizing user-friendly access.
