Becoming Independent (BI) is a nonprofit community benefit organization that has been elevating human abilities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities since 1967. Serving the North Bay, BI's mission is to help people lead meaningful and productive lives. At the core of their vision are values such as human dignity, empowerment, integrity, community, and innovation, which foster authentic human connections and innovative partnerships.

Through their three strategic initiatives of Education, Employment, and Supported Living, BI provides thousands of individuals with opportunities to become engaged and productive community members. With a rich history dating back to 1967, BI has grown from a grassroots organization to the largest service provider of its kind in the North Bay. Committed to breaking barriers for individuals with disabilities, BI believes in the power of authentic human connection and the potential for growth and beauty in each individual.

To achieve their mission, BI offers various programs, including education, employment, supported living, and social enterprise services such as secured document shredding, staffing services, and product assembly and packaging.
