## Description

Bennett Nickerson Environmental Consulting (BNEC) is an environmental organization focused on safeguarding the Atlantic Ocean and the communities and economies that depend on healthy marine ecosystems. Its work addresses threats including overfishing, habitat destruction, pollution, climate change, and risks to threatened species. BNEC promotes ecosystem-based fisheries management, an approach that considers food-web relationships, interactions among fisheries, predator impacts, and the long-term health and reproductive capacity of fish populations. It also advocates for conserving forage fish such as herring, mackerel, and menhaden, which sustain larger predators, and protecting essential breeding, feeding, and nursery habitats.

The organization works to prevent overfishing by supporting sustainable catch limits and science-based fisheries management, and by using law and policy to hold managers accountable. BNEC also seeks stronger protections for endangered marine wildlife, including the North Atlantic right whale, which faces threats from fishing-gear entanglement, ship strikes, and underwater noise. Through advocacy and conservation-focused policy work, BNEC aims to support biodiversity, sustainable fisheries, resilient coastal communities, and thriving oceans.
