The Beppu-Oita Mainichi Marathon, formerly known as the Beppu Marathon, was established in 1952 by Yasuo Ikegami, a coach from Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture. Initially, the race covered a 35km course starting from Beppu Station and turning at Shiraki in Oita City before transitioning to a full marathon in 1953.
