About
Description
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lorain County, founded in 1994, is dedicated to helping children and youth facing adversity in Lorain County achieve lifelong success. As an affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, they follow a highly effective mentoring approach with formalized standards and procedures. By working with community partners, volunteers, and donors, they provide professionally supported, one-on-one mentoring matches between adult volunteers (Bigs) and children and youth (Littles) aged 6 to 19.
Their evidence-based programs focus on educational success, improved attitudes, competencies, and avoiding risky behavior. Through extensive screening procedures and training, they ensure the safety and well-being of the mentees and mentors. With their certified prevention service provider status and partnerships with various organizations, they aim to prevent and reduce involvement in juvenile delinquency and substance abuse.
Research shows that in children with mentors for at least one year, risky behaviors decrease, school attendance improves, self-esteem soars, and graduation rates climb. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lorain County is committed to defending the potential of every child and empowering their resilience
