Big Tree Boating is a beloved community sailing program located in Islesboro, Maine. Our mission is to provide sailing classes for individuals of all abilities, starting from ages 10 and up. Whether you're a resident or a visitor, our program is open to everyone who wants to learn proper seamanship, develop a deep respect for the water, and foster a lifelong love of sailing.

Our instructors are a diverse and experienced group of sailors who have all come through our program. Many of them possess U. S.

Sailing's instructor certification, ensuring top-notch instruction and guidance. From our Program Director, Katie Wuori, to our Head Instructor, Rylee Sienkiewicz, and the rest of our talented team, we are dedicated to providing a safe and enjoyable learning experience for all. Big Tree Boating was founded in 1996 by Betsy Shirley to create a sailing program for island children and adults.

Over the years, we have expanded our offerings and grown our fleet to include a variety of boats, including Mercury keel sloops, 420's, and Lasers. Supported by generous donations and an incredible network of volunteers, we are able to keep our instruction fees affordable and maintain our high standards of quality. It's a true testament to the passion and dedication of our community.

In honor of our founder, Betsy Shirley, we named our power boat Heavens to Betsy and our smaller power boat Captain Hook. Betsy's memory and the tradition of support from her daughters, Betsy, Michel, and Jody Gill, continue to inspire and shape our program. With a dedicated Board of Directors and a strong network of supporters, Big Tree Boating is poised to continue its legacy of providing exceptional sailing education and experiences that leave a lasting impact.
