## Description

William T. Katz is a software engineer and research scientist whose work bridges computer science and biomedical research. A member of the FlyEM Team at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Research Campus, he helps create connectomes by developing systems for managing and reviewing high-resolution fruit fly brain data. His work supports electron microscopy projects that image neural tissue at nanometer resolution, with data generated in collaboration with Google Research.

Katz designs software for visualization, analysis, storage, and versioning of large neuroimaging datasets. He is the architect and principal developer of DVID, and public datasets from the team are available through the Clio platform. His interests include multi-scale visualization, distributed data systems, deep learning, and tools that can accelerate proofreading of neural reconstructions. He also organizes Janelia’s Scientific Visualization Interest Group.

Before joining Janelia, Katz worked in biomedical simulation, medical software, and consulting. His experience includes developing radiotherapy-planning software used at hospitals and clinics, as well as open-source cardiovascular simulation programs.
