## Description

Biofiligree is a research and design project exploring how filigree jewellery techniques can contribute to biomedical applications. Its work brings together science, jewellery and technology to consider how designed objects may support the repair, enhancement and experience of the body. The project examines applications across different bodily contexts, from external orthotics and wearable pieces to subdermal and intracorporeal devices, with an emphasis on the changing relationship between jewellery and medical intervention.

Its research has included a completed study of filigree patterns for biomedical jewellery and ongoing design work on filigree bone-fracture fixation plates. These investigations consider how devices can serve practical purposes while also carrying aesthetic and symbolic meaning, and how jewellery might become integrated with the body as a replacement, repair or prosthetic enhancement. Led by principal investigator Olga Noronha, Biofiligree is supported by a multidisciplinary team of experienced researchers. The project shares its work through research publications and exhibitions, and invites discussion about what jewellery can be and how it may function in medical settings.
