About
Description
Black Mesa Community School, also known as Kits'ili, is a proud and vibrant community nestled in northern Arizona on the Navajo Reservation. With a breathtaking mountain-top location, Kits'ili offers picturesque seasonal scenes and a rich tradition of sheep herding among its elderly residents. The area experiences abundant vegetation during the lush summer months, thanks to generous rainfall, while winters showcase stunning snowy landscapes.
Black Mesa Community School caters to students from kindergarten to 8th grade, serving an annual enrollment of 50 to 80 students. In addition to its core academic programs, the school proudly hosts the Growing In Beauty Home Visitation Program. This initiative focuses on engaging parents and caregivers in the early childhood development of children aged prenatal to 3 years old.
For more information on this program, interested parties can reach out to the school or contact the Parent Educator, Karen L. Bahe. Established in 1977, Black Mesa Community School operates under the Indian Self Determination Act of 1975 as a Grant School, emphasizing the unique educational needs of its Native American students.
Over the years, the school has seen significant development, including the construction of a new school building in 1982, student-use portable classroom buildings, and staff housing units. In 2006, a transportation building was added to house and maintain the school's vehicles. Black Mesa Community School is committed to providing a nurturing and culturally enriching educational experience to its diverse student body and remains an integral part of the growing Kits'ili community
