About

Description

Black-Owned Brooklyn is an online publication that aims to document and preserve the rich history, culture, and businesses of the Black community in Brooklyn. Founded by Cynthia Gordy Giwa and Tayo Giwa, along with photographer Glenn Alan, Black-Owned Brooklyn started as a small act of service journalism in 2018 but quickly grew to become the leading resource for all things Black Brooklyn. Through their website, they showcase stories, food and drink, history and culture, home and design, style and beauty, and health and wellness.

In addition to their publication, Cynthia and Tayo are also filmmakers who have directed and produced independent films. Their documentary feature The Sun Rises in The East, streaming on Amazon Prime Video, tells the story of The East, a pan-African cultural organization in Bedford-Stuyvesant. They also created the short film Soul Summit: Doin' It in the Park, which captures the essence of Fort Greene's iconic Soul Summit house music party.

As community curators, they organize large-scale events like the Juneteenth Food Festival in collaboration with the Weeksville Heritage Center and have curated a holiday pop-up in Atlantic Center Mall. Cynthia's extensive writing on race, culture, and politics has been featured in prestigious publications such as The Washington Post, NPR, and Slate.
