## Description

The Black Theatre Project is a documentary initiative focused on the history, influence, and continuing legacy of Black theatre in the United States. Its feature-length film, Voices of Black Theatre: Fade to Black, tells the story of theatrical works created for and performed by African Americans. The documentary highlights the 1960s and 1970s, when Black artists sought to reclaim their stories and shape their creative futures. It explores the movement’s ideological divisions, financial challenges, and experience of government surveillance, alongside its lasting impact on American theatre and future generations of storytellers. The film also connects that history to a new generation of artists, celebrating past achievements while recognizing the ongoing pursuit of artistic freedom. The project’s website provides information about the film, press materials, and biographies, and invites visitors to get involved, donate, or subscribe for updates. Presented by Black Theatre Project, LLC, the initiative offers audiences a focused view of Black theatre’s cultural significance and the artists who have helped define its path.
