These certificates, which can be used for academic credentials, professional certifications, workforce development, and civic records, are registered on a blockchain, signed with cryptographic technology, and are tamper-proof and shareable. The primary goal of Blockcerts is to empower individuals by giving them control over their official records, enabling them to possess and share them securely. Originally developed as prototypes at the MIT Media Lab and by Learning Machine (now Hyland Credentials), this open-source project actively encourages collaboration and participation from other developers. Though the MIT Media Lab is no longer involved, Hyland is now leading the ongoing development efforts.
