BookBunk is a brand that is rooted in a love for literature and storytelling. They believe that art has the power to bring about transformational social change. BookBunk was founded in October 2017 by Wanjiru Koinange and Angela Wachuka, both writers and publishers. Their vision is to create libraries that serve as the homes of a people's intellectual wealth, places where individuals can learn about their identity and where art and artistic practice can be nurtured, protected, shared, and celebrated. They are actively changing Nairobi by restoring iconic public libraries into inclusive spaces that promote heritage, public art, collective memory, knowledge production, shared experiences, and cultural exchange. BookBunk works on the restoration of libraries such as McMillan Memorial Library, Eastlands Library, and Kaloleni Library. They manage financial and in-kind support, oversee architectural restoration, manage the library spaces, and design and deliver arts and skills-based programming. BookBunk aims to transform libraries into experiential, architectural, social, and digital spaces that cater to the needs of the community and embrace technology.
