The Boston Center for Independent Living (BCIL) is a non-profit organization that has been serving people with disabilities since 1974. As the second independent living center in the country, BCIL was founded by individuals with disabilities who sought full inclusion in society. BCIL's mission is to empower people of all ages with various disabilities, equipping them with practical skills and self-confidence to take control of their lives and actively participate in their communities. BCIL offers the five core services of independent living centers, which include peer mentoring, skills training, information and referral, advocacy, and transition support. Their services and advocacy cover a wide range of areas critical to people with disabilities such as housing, healthcare, employment, transportation, adaptive technology, civil rights law, and education. With a staff and board composed of 70% people with disabilities, BCIL brings both personal and professional expertise to their work. They have played a significant role in the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act and continue to seek improved access and rights for individuals with disabilities. BCIL's ultimate goal is to promote independence and ensure equal opportunities for people with disabilities in the Greater Boston area and across Massachusetts.
