About

Description

Bright Lights is a nonprofit organization that offers unique, hands-on educational opportunities for youth outside of the classroom. Founded in 1987 by two motivated mothers, Barbara Hoppe and Jan Dutton, Bright Lights was created to provide children with mental stimulation during the summer months when budget cuts affected the public school summer program. The organization began with 281 students enrolled in 28 camps at Hawthorne School.

Over the years, Bright Lights has expanded, offering camps in middle and high school buildings, as well as at community sites such as UNL and Pioneers Park. Currently, the program offers approximately 125 half-day and full-day camps, with over 1,600 students enrolled. The camps cover a wide range of topics and cater to students from kindergarten to eighth grade.

Bright Lights prides itself on hiring teachers with expertise in their subject areas and a passion for hands-on learning. The organization also provides need-based scholarships and additional services such as Before Care and Lunch Care. Bright Lights relies on program fees and support from foundations, businesses, and individuals in the community to sustain its operations.

The program aims to create a fun and enriching environment where students can learn, explore their interests, and make lasting memories
