## Description

The Centre for Applied Bioscience Research (CABR), formerly Shannon ABC, is a commercially focused research centre formed through collaboration between Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest and Munster Technological University. It develops processes and products from bio-resources, helping biotechnology and life science industries turn natural materials into useful ingredients and biological products. Its research supports sectors including food and drink, healthcare, cosmetics, agriculture, marine, nutraceuticals and biopharmaceuticals.

CABR’s expertise spans fungal, marine and plant biotechnology, cell culture, bioprospecting, bioprocessing, bioeconomy research and the circular bioeconomy. Its work includes exploring bioactive compounds and natural ingredients, with applications such as food colourants, dietary fatty acids and cosmetic ingredients. The centre also offers access to laboratory facilities, equipment and analytical capabilities for collaborative, industry-focused research.

With experience supporting Irish enterprises’ research and development, CABR helps businesses identify funding opportunities and prepare applications, including for Innovation Vouchers, Innovation Partnerships and European funding. It combines use-inspired research with practical collaboration, connecting companies and researchers to develop new products and processes from biological resources.
